Build Your Habit Muscle: Do Something for 100 days

“I’ll get to it later” or “after I finish this one thing”…Sound familiar? For me, it’s a daily battle…for whatever “it” is. I am disciplined about a few things: my workouts, cooking healthy food, making kids lunches and making my bed everyday. It sounds like a lot (and it is) until I look at how I spend the rest of my day…errands that turn into a time such because “oh, I’ll just stop here” (two hours later), social media and other online distractions, reading (not bad, but a rabbit hole for me), and you can fill in the blank on your time sucks. So what’s getting left in the dust? Snow Happy and building my business, hiking, running organizing and cleaning, taking classes, and the list goes on.

So, I am going to pick two things and for the next 100 days I am going to do them everyday. Number One? I am going to run at least 1 mile everyday. Number Two: Devote two hours a day to Snow Happy. And, I’m going to write about them daily to hold myself accountable.

I’m sure by now you’re wondering a few things, like: How will I fit it in? Well, getting up an hour earlier (in other words, before the kids) and avoiding the things I don’t need to do!! Write it down! It’s a date with yourself worth keeping! And, why 100 days if they say a habit can be formed in 21 days? I need more sticking power than 21 days and just over three months seemed to me achievable and like if I can do it that long, the habits will stick. And better yet, why running if it’s not your thing? I don’t hate running. I’ve never gotten back from a run and thought, “Huh, wish I hadn’t done that.” So, here’s why: You know how some people have their best ideas in the shower? Well, I have them on runs. An intense workout for me is like meditation. I focus solely on the task at hand and it’s so hard it clears my mind. Running, my ideas flow freely from the first foot fall to the last. Finally, why Snow Happy? It’s simple: My goal is to build a business to help support my family in a way I can still be there for them.

And, don’t get me wrong, I realize I am privileged to have the choice and so I’m choosing. If you are privileged enough to make these choices DO IT with me!! My thing doesn’t have to be your thing. Book you’ve wanted to read or haven’t read a whole book since your kids were born? Project you wanted to start? Business idea? Healthier eating? Class you want to take? Quit smoking or diet soda? Meditation? Walk around the block? Whatever it is, I challenge you to pay it the attention it deserves for 100 days. If you want, share how it’s going, how you feel. Do you feel a shift in mindset or a habit forming?

Lastly, you may be wondering how this fits in with Snow Happy. Well, I think perfectly. “Finding the joy of winter wherever the snow may fall” is our mantra, mission, goal. But, I think to find the spark, the beauty, to stop and appreciate it all, we need to have discipline, to live intentionally and with purpose. Then, when opportunities arise to step outside of our norm, our routine, we can breath in and exhale and really take it all in and find the joy.
